Heart (real name: Tina Montalbano) is like the cool chick a grade above you in high school who makes you want to do things your parents told you not to do. She could convince you to shave your head or get a tattoo that can't be hidden by a long-sleeve shirt. It’s this badass approach to life that has made her the go-to hairstylist to rock stars both old and new. Lucky for me, I got a rocker transformation, and she took my nice, Texas-girl blonde hair to an Almost Famous level of awesome.
Heart grew up in Amityville, Texas, and started cutting and coloring hair at 16. She moved to New York City after high school and quickly earned a reputation for cool-kid hair. It was styling a shoot with Nine Inch Nails for Stephen Sprouse that launched her into the world of music. She's since done hair for Iggy Pop, Rod Stewart, Tony Bennet, Bono, and Willy Nelson, to name just a few. Her Flatiron district salon is suitably rocker, with deep purple walls, a gold ceiling, vintage posters, and couches strewn with heart-shaped pillows (natch). Above the single washing bowl is a signed black-and-white photo of her, Alice Cooper, and a snake. Her business card is a heart-shaped guitar pick with her name and number.
After a quick trim (I have never had layers that fall this perfectly), she bleached the top half of my head, toned it, then darkened the bottom half. Her final step was to fade the front pieces from blonde to brown. Her most important piece of advice? “One of the most important qualities of a rock-star look is confidence and attitude—you really have to own it. A little layering and movement in the hair is also very important when strutting your stuff, as the world is your stage.”
